Social Dance - 3 Things to Know
IT'S NOT CHOREOGRAPHY
Social dance is not about performance or entertainment, even though it is equally exciting to watch. The representation of partner dance on television always shows it with glitzy costumes, high kicks, crazy turns or big lifts that it makes it seem intimidating to the rest of us. It's certainly entertaining, but it's only possible if the two partners rehearse and learn it together usually for a performance, contests or for a first dance at a wedding. If you tried it at a holiday party, better move the punch bowl out the way.
IT'S BASED ON ONE BASIC STEP
All social dance styles; swing, salsa, etc. use a basic step that everyone knows so you can dance with anyone no matter their skill level. This is what makes it "social". Think of it like the rules of engagement of a sport.
How do you think all the people back in the 40's & 50's so easily danced so well together? Again, the big aerial lifts in the movies like "A league of Their Own" or "Swing Kids" were not as common as they make it appear and not at all necessary to experience a "dance high".
IT'S AN INCREDIBLE CARDIO WORKOUT
Considering Health Clubs and the rise of fitness as we know it today didn't begin until the 70's, social dancing was one of the main forms of physical fitness. The women had incredible legs, tiny waists and insane endurance to keep up with the bands all night. The men were lean, strong and looked great in white t-shirts.
The current DanceSwing lessons are based on Swing Dancing. Swing dance started in NYC and many of the men were street fighters, which is what give it an athletic stance that is similar to sports like boxing, football, baseball, tennis making it an ideal addition to athletic training programs.
